What I Use

Here are the things I use in my tinkering.  There's nothing special about them, mostly general, home gamer items.

Computing Technology

I have a variety of hardware, and none of it current.  My primary workspace is an older 8th generation i7 Intel NUC.  It works well for me as it has 16GB ram and both a 1TB SSD and a 1TB spinning drive.  Its connected to Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard and a generic 27 inch 2k monitor.

In general, I like either HP or Lenovo hardware.  Since the new stuff is prohibitively pricey, I have been purchasing off lease business class hardware from the two brands and have been very satisfied.  Their business hardware is much more robust than the consumer items, and since I'm a tinkerer, I can fix them as well.  The difference between business and general computer hardware is quite different.  Boards are mounted better.  There are multiple board modules in the computer, which facilitates repairs easier (ie - the power connection board is separate so it can be swapped if it breaks when someone trips over the power cord.  The cases are more robust with more screws, the hinges are stronger and have sturdier hinges.

Software

I've been a Windows guy since roughly 1989, so I'm currently on Windows 10.  I also am a Microsoft 365 subscriber which provides not only the office applications, but 1TB of online storage that can be accessed anywhere.  It makes things convenient as I can access files and information anywhere.

I use Fusion 360 for my modeling with the hobby license.  It gives adequate power for doing what I need to do.

When working on pictures, I use Photoshop Elements to manage edits.

3D Printing

I have a Prusa i3 Mk3S+ from a couple years ago.  I got it during one of their Black Friday deals, so it came with the smooth and textured plates, plus an extra spool of filament.

I mostly print with PLA and PETG filament.  I've used many brands and haven't paid close enough attention to notice any real differences between brands, although I try to stick to brands you see often - Prusa, Inland, Overture, Hatchbox and so on.

I have a Raspberry Pi with Octoprint running OctoDash to give local control, file storage and network connectivity.

Tools

Most of my workshop handtools are older Craftsman, with some oddball Stanley, ChannelLock, Menards, or other items thrown in.

My current battery power tools are also Craftsman - their older C3 19.2 vold system tools.  I have mostly older aftermarket batteries, however they work well.  I can't justify re-investing in a new setup, as I have roughly 13 tools that use their batteries.  I also have a Bosch Jigsaw, which cuts real nice and is light weight.

I have a variety of corded tools - Craftsman drill and recip saw, Masterforce orbital sander and belt sander, Performax palm router (looks and takes Makita accesories), Dremel multi tool and oscillating tool, Porter Cable biscuit joiner.  I'm not a professional, so I can't justify some of the higher priced tools, but when I get something, I often try to get something better than entry level.  I find those don't perform well and will disappoint in the near term.

For larger bench tools, I have a Craftsman 10 inch chop saw and 10 inch bench drill press, a Delta 12 inch band saw, portable table saw and 12 inch planer, a Performax combo belt/disk sander.
